National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) President Syed Ali Raza announced on Thursday that NBP is providing a total of Rs 50 million for humanitarian relief to the internally displaced persons in the wake of recent military operations being conducted against the militants in troubled areas of NWFP.
Out of the total contribution, a sum of Rs 40 million is being contributed to "Prime Minister's Special Fund for Relief of Victims of Terrorism" while Rs 10 million are being contributed to "Chief Minister's Special Fund NWFP for Internally Displaced Persons-2009".
In a letter to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, President NBP expressed his sincere sympathies on behalf of the workers of the bank for the victims of the terrorism. He also expressed concerns for the people of the Malakand Division who are in dire need of humanitarian support. Over a million people are displaced and are living in the refugee camps in harsh conditions.
They require clear drinking water, food and medicines. Provincial as well as federal government have already announced aid package for the immediate relief but the magnitude of the tragedy also requires all segments of the nation particularly corporate sector to come forward and support these displaced people. NBP with its largest branch network nation-wide has set out special arrangements to collect donations from the people of Pakistan for Prime Minister's Relief Fund.
The fund has been created on the directives of the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to rehabilitate the Internally Displaced Persons of the affected areas. NBP has opened an account to collect funds on behalf of the NWFP government. The NBP has also set up special booths at the relief camps in co-ordination with Pakistan Baitul Mal to disburse relief funds to the affected individuals.
Persons willing to come forward and contribute can do so by donating in the following NBP accounts: Account No 555555 - Prime Minister's special fund for relief of victims of terrorism. Account No 666666 - Chief Minister's fund NWFP for internally displaced persons.-PR
