Chicken price dips in local market

KARACHI: Chicken price has dipped in retail market to Rs220 per kg against Rs270 per kg few weeks ago, as its demand has sharply declined in Karachi ahead of Eidul Azha, traders said.

The sharp decline in chicken price is attributed by the traders to the persisting decline in its demand in the market.

They said that people were not purchasing chicken meat before Eidul Azha.

However, some of the retailers say the prices of live bird and its meat has been cut to attract people, as sale of chicken meat declines sharply after Eidul Azha.

It is a general trend in Pakistan that overwhelming majority of consumers purchase chicken meat in bulk and stores in refractor and fridge and consumes it piecemeal.

As Eidul Azha is fast approaching, people usually prefer to keep their refrigerators and fridge empty to store meat of sacrificial animals.

The broiler live bird is tagged at Rs 138 per kg at wholesale.

Karachiites consume around 4,00,000 poultry birds daily when prices are high. When the price of live bird and meat decline the daily demand reaches to 4,50,000-5,00,000 birds.
