Federal Minister for Railways, Ghaus Bakhsh Mahar has said that the recent train accident involving Tezrao was not a terrorist incident.
Talking to reporters after inspecting a railways sleeper factory here on Saturday, he highlighted a number of reformative steps taken for improving this mega public service organisation.
He said that a 700-km long railway track is being re-laid and efforts are under way to connect it with the network of Central Asian States via Afghanistan.
The ticketing system of Pakistan Railways is also being further improved by computerisation in three more cities along with the existing network in 13 cities of the country, while work is also underway to increase the scope of the electric train from Khanewal to Samasatta, the minister added.
Managing Director Railways, Shafqat Rabbani, apprised the minister about working of the factory established in 1981. He said the facility could manufacture 100,000 sleepers in single shift, while Rs 205.68 million is being spent to upgrade its capacity to 400,000.
The minister was apprised that the country needs 1.2 million sleepers annually and the demand is likely to increase with the development of Gwadar port and the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
