imageWAH CANTT: Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain Tuesday inaugurated a one-megawatt captive mode solar power project at the Wah Nobel Chemicals Limited, a division of Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF).

The minister unveiled the plaque along with Secretary Defence Production Lt Gen (R) Syed Muhammad Owais, POF Board Chairman Lt Gen Umer Mehmood Hayat, Chief Executive Alternative Energy Development Board Amjad Ali Awan, CEO Nobel Group Brig (r) Shiraz Ullah Chaudhry, Director General Frontier Works Organization (FWO) Major General Muhammad Afzal, Chairman Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) Kamra Air Marshal Javaid Ahmed and Director General Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) Maj Gen Agha Masood Akram.

The Nobel Group has completed the project in collaboration with a private sector company, Reon Energy Solutions.

Under the project, completed in a four-month period at a cost of around $1.5 million, the Wah Nobel Chemicals Factory will use the solar power in its daytime shift and save approximately Rs 24.5 million annually on account of electricity expenses.

Later, addressing the participants of the inaugural ceremony, the minister termed the project a `landmark' achievement and a milestone towards attaining self-sufficiency in energy sector by tapping the solar power.

"The project will be a catalyst for industrial and corporate sector to tap the country solar power potential. It will prove to be a landmark in the history of Captive Solar Projects."

The minister said march towards prosperity, revival of economy, growth of gross domestic product (GDP), creation of job opportunities and poverty alleviation could only be ensured through industrialization and initiation of mega infrastructural project.

"Development and industrialization is the vision and corner stone of the government policy and the same is being pursued vigorously," he remarked.

Pakistan, he said, was lagging far behind in the global energy race for renewable technology and stressed the need to take benefit of plenty of sunlight for producing energy.

The chairman POF Board,CEO Nobel Energy group and CEO Reon Solar Energy Solutions Inamur Rehman also spoke on the occasion.
