French barley due for Iran

Published Updated

imagePARIS: A ship is due at the French Atlantic port of La Pallice to load a hefty 75,000 tonnes of barley to Iran in a rare shipment to the Middle Eastern country, port sources said on Friday.

The data compiled by Reuters showed that the Giovanni Botiglieri is due to load in the French port next Thursday, but it could be delayed due to adverse weather conditions and a docker strike announced for Tuesday, port sources said.

France exported a total of 87,400 tonnes of barley to Iran last season in its first shipments for several years.

Barley exports have been running at a fast pace in France since the start of the 2013-2014 season on July 1, with a first cargo of French barley to Jordan in more than five years due to be loaded at Rouen and Dunkirk from next week.

The barley sales reflected a fall in French prices prompted by better harvest prospects than in rival exporters Russia and Ukraine.

According to data compiled by Reuters, France loaded 455,000 tonnes of barley for export outside the EU in July and August, the first two months of the 2013-2014 marketing year.

This was slightly ahead of the 443,000 tonnes of barley shipped in the corresponding period last year, which put France on the way to 2012-2013 exports of 1.8 million tonnes, a 10-year high, according to customs records.

The heavy volume of barley due to be loaded in La Pallice also comes at a time when the port has less demand for wheat shipments because some harvested crop in the region failed to meet wheat quality standards for export.
