KARACHI: The city administration in its campaign against profiteers challaned 283 shopkeepers for overcharging people against edible items and imposed an accumulative total of Rs3,18,300 fine money upon them.
According to details made available by the commissioner office on Monday the teams headed by magistrates and assistant commissioners fined 78 milk sellers, 73 fruit sellers, 34 grocers, 59 green grocers, 23 chicken meat sellers and 16 flour sellers for violating the officially approved price list for the city.
One of the shopkeeper was also jailed for being found repeatedly violating the list and fleecing consumers in general.
Moreover, as per directives of the Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, communicated through Sindh Chief Secretary, the commissioner has ordered the inspection teams to ensure that raids are conducted at different hours of time so that retailers may not resort to the overcharging after departure of the inspectors from the market.
Karachi commissioner also ordered that a system be evolved whereby public confidence must be restored and they may immediately contact the control office, established at commissioner office, and register instance of price hike experienced by them in any of the local markets or shops.
Concerned department was also urged to realize its responsibility and keep strict vigil vis a vis compliance of price list by local shopkeepers and retailers.
