NA passes Capital University Islamabad Bill, 2013

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday passed 'The Capital University Islamabad Bill, 2013' with an aim to set up a university in the Capital to contribute to the higher education learning in the country.

The bill was moved by Yasmeen Rehman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The statement of objects and reasons of the bill says, "Setting standards for 21st century Pakistan, the Capital University aims to contribute to the higher education learning in Pakistan by promoting innovation, research, training and learning in the fields of both social and natural sciences".

"The establishment of the Capital University through this act of Parliament in the federal capital Islamabad seeks to encourage innovation in these issues and in particular broadening the base of access to higher education in Pakistani youth. The university will through application and learning in aforementioned fields will help to increase the knowledge base in Pakistan and facilitate scholarship as it becomes a seat of high learning", the statement added.

Earlier, Yasmeen Rehman explained that the bill was aimed at promoting education. All parliamentarians should welcome such bills which help promote education in the country, she said.

Abdul Qadir Khanzada of MQM welcomed the bill and said that universities should also be set up in all the provinces of the country. He said all the four provinces should have representation in the Capital University adding that students from allover the country should have equal opportunity to get admission in the university.

Bushra Gohar of ANP, however was of the view that the bill was being moved in haste. She said she was not against the bill but such a haste makes no sense.
