pia2 400RAWALPINDI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will start operating two flights every week for Saidu Sharif, Swat aimed at facilitating people of the area, local and foreign tourists after the Eid-ul-Azha, PIA's Managing Director Junaid Yunus said on Wednesday.

"After the Eid-ul-Azha, PIA will formally start operating its flights twice a week for Saidu Sharif. The flights will operate between Saidu Sharif-Islamabad or Peshawar," he said addressing a gathering at the Saidu Sharif Airport where PIA's test flight landed carrying 30 passengers from Islamabad.

A test flight of PIA PK-641 on Wednesday morning left from Benazir Bhutto International Airport Islamabad for Saidu Sharif carrying 30 passengers including its MD Junaid Yunus, staff of Civil Aviation Authority and journalists.

The plane touched the Saidu Airport after 40 minutes flight where people gave it a warm welcome standing at rooftops of their homes.

The air-travel facility is being provided to people of the area after around six-year's suspension. The Saidu Sharif Airport, established in 1978, was closed down in June 2007 due to militancy in the area.

Law enforcement agencies have flushed out miscreants from the area and now the situation is normal there.
