KIEV: Most of Ukrainian winter grain crops are in perfect condition despite a lack of moisture during sowing, a senior state weather forecaster said on Wednesday.

APK-Inform agriculture consultancy quoted Tetyana Adamenko as saying that 80 percent of crops were in perfect condition, while there were fewer sprouts that did not survive the winter.

The area sown for Ukraine's 2020, winter grain harvest rose 0.2 percent to 7.6 million hectares.

This included 6.4 million hectares of winter wheat, 0.6 percent less than a year earlier.

Winter wheat dominates Ukraine's wheat harvest, accounting for more than 95 percent of the country's wheat production.

Adamenko said last month that there were no significant weather risks for Ukrainian winter grain and there were grounds to expect a high harvest of winter grains.

Ukraine harvested a record 75.1 million tonnes of grain in 2019, compared with 70 million tonnes in 2018.
