CBOT corn ends firm in nearby months, acres hit Dec contract

Published Updated

CHICAGO: Chicago Board of Trade corn futures closed firm in nearby months on spillover buying from gains in soybeans and a weak dollar but new-crop December was lower on bull-spreading after the US Agriculture Department's forecast for the largest US corn acreage this year since 1944.

* Private exporters reported the sale of 120,000 tonnes of US corn to China for 2011/12 delivery and 110,744 tonnes of US corn to an unknown destination for 2011/12 delivery.

* USDA's outlook conference left unchanged from its baseline projections the forecast for 94.0 million acres of corn this year in the United States, the most since 1944. USDA forecast plantings of the eight major crops at 254.4 million acres, up from a previous estimate of 251.2 million.

* Corn exports from Ukraine in 2012/13 are expected to rise about 15 to 20 percent to between 14 million and 15 million tonnes, an official of the State Food and Grain Corp of Ukraine said on Thursday.

* Dollar pared losses against the euro on Thursday after data showed new US claims for unemployment benefits were unchanged last week, remaining at the lowest level since the early days of the 2007-2009 recession.

* Key support for March at its 100-day moving average of $6.30-1/4 and resistance at the 200-day ma of $6.63-1/4. Nine-day RSI was at 53.
