ISLAMABAD: Four Pakistani students will participate in London International Youth Science Forum-2012 (LIYSF-2012), scheduled to be held from August 16-30.
For selection of participants of the Forum from Pakistan, interviews of students were held here on Monday at Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF). Chairman PSF, Prof. Dr. Manzoor Soomro headed the interview committee, comprising eminent scientists of the country.
Talking to APP, Spokesperson of PSF, Rehana Batool said under its science promotion and popularization programme, PSF and National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS) are arranging this first ever visit of Pakistani students of 17-21 years of age.
She said some 222 students of universities from all over the country had applied for attending the Forum and 20 shortlisted students were interviewed.
Four students selected after the interviews will represent Pakistan in the forum.
Rehana said LIYSF is an educational forum created, owned and operated by Educational Cultural Exchanges (International), having its registered office at Royal Parade Mews, Kent. The event is regularly organized on annual basis since 2009.
Major activities scheduled in the Forum this year are lectures, demonstrations, visits to industrial sites, research centres, scientific institutions and organizations.
Each year, more than 300 students from all over the world gather under one roof and live together as community members for 15 days, which help them to understand each other's customs and culture.
So far the Forum had caught attention of thousands of students from all over the world. It also provides a deeper understanding of science and its application for the benefit of mankind.
Professor Sir Roy Anderson will give the principal opening address on the theme: The Human Planet.
In LIYSF-2012, the focus will be on Earth Sciences, and how they affect the human race; and how humans interact with our planet.
The Forum will include a seminar on 'Overcoming Disaster' by Sir Colin Terry, dealing with the ways to cope with widespread problems such as disease epidemics; geological events such as desertification, floods, earthquakes, and volcanic activity; and social aspects such as population growth and food supply.
PSF will sponsor visit of four students to participate in LIYSF-2012, which will result in capacity building and personal growth of the students.
