Javed Qamar's passion and love for calligraphy was evident in his detailed work. For more than two decades he is constantly developing new techniques which consequently give his work more depth, meaning and maturity.
His inventive nature led him to innovative ideas and in a way he has created his own unique style to advance the tradition of calligraphy. This time also he used historical buildings their minarets and domes among his calligraphies to give innovation to his work in a solo show titled "Rung-e-Zubaan" at Art Kaam Gallery, Karachi. His calligraphies reflected his enthusiasm and love for this ancient art and became reflections of holy words that are like divine blessing for him.
His magnetic calligraphy work was appealing and compelling. He is known for his bright tone and in the recent series also calligraphy appear in various shapes, highlighted by Islamic motifs in bright colours such as red, orange, green, blue, ochre, cloudy white that are eye catching with the glitter of silver and gold leaf that enrich the artworks resulting in an artistic tradition of extraordinary beauty. Thus contrasting with strong and bright shades, his work mesmerized the viewers.
With subtle tones and intricate writings in his varied artworks he created intense pieces that are imperial in nature. His calligraphy forms were meticulously written sparked with spirituality. He came up with new compositions in this exhibition. The ovals, circles and semi-circles with splashes of mystifying light emitting from the holy words made his calligraphies more unique.
Exotically carved and brightly coloured his calligraphy works have beautiful flowers and geometric designs and antique patterns most famous on the walls of ancient mosques and palaces of 16th and 17th century.
His alphabets in Arabic were very fine as compare to his contemporaries. He used different variations of Khat in his calligraphy works often combine illumination like gold or silver leaf to enhance the purity of his work. But he loved to use Kufi, Thuluth and Deewani scripts in his calligraphy.
He gave form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skilful manner while transcribing the Holy Qura'n in his calligraphy paintings. Javed used various scripts in his own manner with bright colours but in some what complex and difficult style. His calligraphy works were highly mannered and excessively cursive and very much structured with its letters.
The intertwining of its letters from top to bottom punctuated and decorated to appear as one piece. The spaces between the letters are spangled with decorative devices.
Javed has created a wealth of variety and develop endless patterns in writing in an expressive, harmonious and skilful manner. In his calligraphy the alphabets were disciplined yet fluid and spontaneous.
His work was vivacious because of his strong gestured strokes and vibrant colours. His concept of beauty results in the manifestation of such works with bold colours in an aesthetical manner.
He balanced the composition thoughtfully. The symmetry in the compositions were remarkable. The Quranic verses along with the beauty of colour enhanced with the glitter of silver and gold leaf and splendour of Islamic motifs enrich his artwork to provide visual pleasure.
