Pakistan customs on Tuesday claimed to have foiled an attempt to smuggle substantial quantity of contraband heroin at Jinnah International Airport (JIAP). This was stated by Collector Preventive Dr Iftikhar at press briefing held at AFU here on Tuesday. He said that the customs staff posted at the international departure hall Karachi selected passengers and their luggage on the suspicion of drug smuggling after profiling. During examination of the two bags, they recovered 10 kilograms of heroin powder from a Pakistani couple residing at Karachi.
The drugs were cleverly concealed inside the false cavity of two suitcases. The passengers were leaving for Maldives via Dubai by a private airline. During initial course of investigation, the detained couple revealed that two more suitcases containing heroine powder were at their residence. Reacting on this, a team of customs officials raided at aforementioned place and recovered two more suitcases containing 10 kilograms of heroin powder (5 kilogram in each suitcase).
The value of total recovered heroin powder 20 kilograms is estimated to Rs 200 million in international markets. The customs department considered this seizure as the biggest ever during past 10 years. An FIR was lodged and further investigation was underway.
