Inspector General of Police (Sindh) Allah Dino Khowaja on Thursday said his department was not able to keep an eye on 20 million people living in Karachi with only 2,500 close circuit television cameras (CCTV) installed in parts of this port city. "It is the prime responsibility of police to curb crimes, and ensure safe living environment for citizens. However, police alone is not supposed to be held accountable as a half of the city's population live in slum areas," he told the media, adding that a large number of people were living without mandatory documentation and registration.
He stressed that combined efforts from all the stakeholders were required to steer the city out of challenges that warranted foolproof strategy. He said dozens of policemen had sacrificed their lives in fight against terrorism and street crimes, particularly, in Karachi during recent years. He vowed police would continue to serve the country. Sharing the latest data, he said, as many as 200 criminals have been nabbed during last 15 days.
To a query about extra-judicially killed Naqeebullah Mehsud of South Waziristan, IGP Sindh said he was innocent and his 'cold blooded' murder could not be justified at any cost. He asserted there was no ground for in defense of those cops involved in Naqeebullah's extra-judicial murder. He said social media was active in highlighting crimes taking place in the city.
Khowaja further said when Intizar was gunned down by Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) officials, it was the police who had informed his father, arrested the involved officials and ensured they were treated as criminals.
