Senior vice chairman of Pakistan Biscuits and Confectionary Manufacturers Association (PBCMA), Raees Ahmed has demanded that sugar export must not be allowed because it would cause it shortage and hike in price. He alleged that sugar lobby is now seeking huge export subsidies to make excessive profits despite the fact that sugar price has already been higher than the rest of the world. He said that for the last 2 years, sugar industry earned bumper profits due to soared price.
"Unlike their claim, most of the sugar industries have never paid the farmers the government-mandated price of sugarcane," he said. "If they are allowed sugar export, it will cause sugar shortage in Pakistan during the holy month of Ramadan," he said, adding that sugar price would soar and people would suffer from shortage and price-hike.
