The provincial government is planning to develop one of the islets at Keenjhar lake to increase recreational opportunities for the visitors, Sindh Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Minister, Syed Ali Sardar Shah told the lawmakers on Thursday. Replying to the queries of legislators during the Sindh Assembly's questions and answers session, the minister said that the lake has great potential islets that can be developed for tourism purposes.
He said that the government is chalking out plans to select one of the potential islets with a view to increasing recreational opportunities for tourists. "Scores of islets at the lake plunge with the water level rise. However, one has been identified that is at a height that can be developed," he answered.
Talks are under way with the tour operators to set up floating huts at the lake, he said, adding that the government has completed refurbishing the six huts that were in shabby conditions. "Renovation of some 24 more huts will complete by June," he said. MQM legislators and Deputy Speaker, Shehla Raza again turned hostile during the session, as a result, the opposition walked out of the house in protest. Opposition leader, MQM's Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hassan threatened the deputy speaker to hold assembly sitting outside the house if they are denied to speak their issues.
Dispute arose when MQM's Muhammad Hussain's adjournment motion was denied admissibility for a debate in the house. MQM's Syed Sardar Ahmed said that a legislator's motion cannot be denied admissibility without being heard. Khawaja Izhar called the deputy speaker's behaviour toward opposition as 'dictatorial'.
Dr Sikandar Mandhro replied that exercising the discretionary powers is the right of the speaker. He said that the house has always welcomed the opposition bills and resolutions and the treasury never gave a bias impression. Syed Sardar Ahmed said that the discretionary powers of the speaker has been existed for the years but never exercised before.
In response to a call for knocking court's doors on rules of procedures of the assembly, Shehla Raza said that move will weaken the legislature in its powers. How the assembly will become empowered if its rules are challenged in the courts, she said, clarifying that she cannot override the rulings in line with the procedures.
