The Punjab government is going to establish first of its kind waste segregation and recycling plant in Sahiwal city. Aljazari Water & Sanitation Academy's Principal Dr Kiran Farhan revealed this while giving her presentation on Sahiwal Treat & Disposal Plant at a seminar on 'waste segregation & recycling facilities'.
The seminar that was organised by the Urban Unit to discuss waste segregation and recycling in Pakistani context while seeking expert opinion from Turkey's leading firms in the segregation business. She said the idea is to move beyond landfills in Pakistan through diverting the recyclables and organic wastes for economic recovery. Diverting waste from landfill is one inevitable factor for improving the use of resources and reducing the environmental impacts of waste management, she added.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Board of Directors of the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) Rafay Alam said the arrival of reputed and experienced companies in Pakistan need to be encouraged. He said salary and lifestyle of sanitary workers must be improved in order to improve the service delivery of waste management companies.
Asif Farooqi from Waste Busters shared his company's success stories with the audience while stressing on the need to turn waste into a profitable and economically viable industry. He said 20 percent of waste generated in Pakistan is recycled and they need to improve this statistics.
