Young-gun Farhan Zaman clinched the trophy of the Chief of the Air Staff International Squash Championship after defeating his strong rival Danish Atlas in the thrilling final played here at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex on Saturday. Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Ather Hussain Bokhari was the chief guest on this occasion who also witnessed the match. Former World Champion Qamar Zaman, and large number of game spectators were also present.
It was the second consecutive success of Farhan Zaman as he won the title of the US $10,000 Professional Squash Association recognised Rangers International Squash Cup held in Jehangir Khan Squash Complex, Karachi and now the Chief of the Air Staff International Squash Championship, carried at prize money of US $15,000 by defeating Danish Atlas in the final. It really delighted me the way I played the Championship by defeating Nasir Iqbal and Danish Atlas in the semi-finals and final, Farhan Zaman, son of PSA qualified coach Fakhar Zaman told APP soon after his victory. I'm trying hard to keep my fitness level 110 percent and with the grace of Almighty Allah so far I'm fully succeeded in,20-year-old Farhan Zaman, who is nephew of former World Champion Qamar Zaman added.
I'm also going for US Circuit on Sunday via Islamabad to New York where I will play the first tournament of US $25000, followed by 12 other tournaments, Farhan said. Certainly while playing the international tournament, it would help me improve my overall world ranking, he added. He also lauded Pakistan Squash Federation for holding international tournaments at home which would help improving players world ranking.
Farhan, who reached to his career-high world ranking of World No 86 in June 2013 and was No 3 in Junior Squash, lost the first set 10-12 where Danish gave his tough resistance as the two were tied right from the start at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10, and at the end Danish took the set at 10-12.
Hailing from Peshawar Farhan Zaman has dictated well a good less of squash to Danish Atlas, younger brother of ex-Pakistan No 1 and Asian gold medalist Amir Atlas Khan. After winning two consecutive PSA International Tournaments, Farhan Zaman would certainly improved his world ranking to 65 plus.
After conceding the first set, Farhan Zaman never looked behind apart from the third set where they were tied at 7-all, otherwise he kept control over his excellent drops shorts and long rallies by putting Danish behind all the time. Farhan Zaman once hit the tin in the second set against 5-times hit by Danish. Farhan won the second set 11-4 and marched as victorious in the third set he won by 11-6. It was the fourth and decisive set where the two gave each other tough resistance. Danish was in certain lead of reaching 2-5 and 2-7 but Farhan jumped back and first tied the set points at 7-all and then took the set by 11-7. At the end, the chief guest gave away cash prize and trophies to the winners and runners-up.
