Iran denies border closure reports, says trade with Pakistan continues

  • Says there are no restrictions on the Iranian side on the export of Iranian goods to Pakistan
Published Updated

Iran has denied reports that it has closed its borders to Pakistan, saying there are no restrictions on the export of Iranian goods, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), while blaming changes to Pakistan’s import documentation procedures for disrupting cargo shipments.

Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam clarified the situation in a statement shared on X, saying Iran’s borders with all neighbouring countries remained open.

“Currently, there are no restrictions on the Iranian side on the export of Iranian goods to Pakistan, including LPG,” the ambassador said.

He added that closing borders with neighbouring countries, particularly Pakistan, would be neither logical nor in the interests of either country under the prevailing circumstances.

The ambassador said changes in Pakistan’s E-Form procedure for imports from Iran had created a situation in which traders were effectively unable to dispatch cargo from Iran to Pakistan.

He said consultations with the Pakistani side were underway to resolve the issue.

The clarification comes amid reports of disruptions in cross-border trade, particularly involving LPG shipments.

According to the ambassador, several hundred trucks carrying LPG had crossed the Rimdan border into Gabd on the Pakistani side.

However, the vehicles had remained there for several weeks without being unloaded or cleared, further complicating the movement of goods and the flow of bilateral trade.

Moghadam stressed that cross-border trade was an integral part of bilateral agreements reached at the highest levels and served the mutual interests of both countries and their people.

He said Iran had made every possible effort to facilitate and promote trade with Pakistan and remained committed to working closely with Pakistani counterparts to address existing challenges.

The ambassador added that both sides would continue efforts to facilitate the movement of goods and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
