Pakistan’s first astronaut to embark on space mission next month: minister

  • The nation also plans its inaugural Space Museum to inspire future generations

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal on Sunday said Pakistan’s first astronaut will embark on a space mission from China’s space centre on November 25.

Addressing the concluding ceremony of World Space Week in Narowal, he said Pakistan aims to achieve a lunar landing by 2035, the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives said in a press release.

Iqbal said cooperation with China would help Pakistan reach new heights in space exploration.

He also announced plans to establish Pakistan’s first Space Museum at the University of Narowal to promote scientific awareness and inspire the next generation to pursue space science and technology.

Under the vision of the planning minister, World Space Week 2026 was celebrated for the first time in Narowal in collaboration with SUPARCO, with the aim of raising awareness among the younger generation about space science, scientific research, and modern technology.

Addressing the concluding ceremony of World Space Week in Narowal, the minister highlighted the growing importance of space technology in agriculture, communications, climate monitoring, education and national security.

“Scientific research and space exploration are essential for technological advancement and the pursuit of knowledge,” he stressed.

Iqbal said the Holy Quran encourages reflection on the creation of the universe, underscoring the importance of scientific curiosity, research and learning among young people. He noted that Muslim scholars had once made significant contributions to astronomy and scientific discovery, and called for renewed efforts to restore Pakistan’s leadership in knowledge and research.

Highlighting the achievements of young Pakistanis, the minister congratulated the University of Narowal on securing first position at the Islamabad Science Festival, describing the achievement as a reflection of the talent and potential of the country’s youth.

“Improved access to higher education is enabling students who have previously faced financial barriers to achieve distinction,” he said.
