MSP for wheat: Provincial consensus vital for fair returns for farmers: Tanveer
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain on Tuesday said that the announcement of an appropriate Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat, with the consensus of all provincial governments, is mandatory to ensure fair returns for farmers and safeguard national food security.
The minister said this while presiding over the first meeting of the Wheat Management Committee jointly with the Prime Minister’s advisor on political affairs, Rana Sanullah.
It is pertinent to mention here that during a recent meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee, the minister stated the wheat MSP for the 2026-27 Rabi season would be above Rs 4,000 per 40 kg.
During the meeting, Hussain said that the consensus of federal and provincial governments is mandatory to fix the wheat MSP for the coming Rabi season. “The MSP will be determined while keeping in view the cost of production and ground realities,” he said, adding the provision of subsidies to farmers is inevitable for increasing agricultural production and making growers financially stable.
He said the government was making all efforts to produce a sufficient quantity of wheat aimed at fulfilling domestic requirements and ensuring food security. Setting up an effective and fair system would be ensured for wheat procurement, he said.
Hussain said that proper strategic reserves of wheat are mandatory to ensure the uninterrupted availability of wheat in the country. Stabilising wheat prices and ensuring the wheat supply to consumers at reasonable rates were the government’s top priority.
The minister stressed that effective coordination and a joint strategy between the federal and provincial governments were mandatory for wheat management.
