Lack of efficient transport system hampers development of Karachi
KARACHI: Lack of an efficient, affordable and reliable public transport system continues to hamper development and uplift of Karachi, said Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) chairman Altaf Shakoor here on Sunday.
The scale of Karachi’s transport challenge was highlighted by a study conducted by an auto parts company, which assessed public transport in 100 cities worldwide, he said.
As reported by Bloomberg CityLab in 2020, Karachi ranked last among 100 cities covered by the study for public transport.
Shakoor said Karachi required a modern transport network capable of meeting mobility needs of its population.
He said the situation particularly affects low- and middle-income families, students, workers and employees who rely heavily on public transport.
The history of the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) illustrates the seriousness of the problem, he said.
He said despite repeated efforts over the years, the KCR has yet to be fully revived. The prolonged absence of a functioning circular railway has placed additional pressure on Karachi’s road network.
He said improving public transport is also essential for Karachi’s economic development.
“Efficient connectivity between residential areas, workplaces, markets, educational institutions and healthcare facilities can expand access to employment and other opportunities while reducing the time and cost of daily travel,” he said.
Better integration between different modes of transport, proper route planning, reliable services and effective traffic management would significantly improve mobility across the city, he said.
The PDP chairman said a stronger public transport network could also reduce dependence on private vehicles, ease congestion and contribute to a cleaner urban environment.
There is a need for coordinated and sustained efforts by the relevant authorities to address Karachi’s transport deficit, he said.
Investment in modern public transport, timely completion of mass-transit projects, rehabilitation of the KCR, improved road infrastructure and effective institutional coordination can play an important role in the megacity’s long-term development.
He said public transport is not merely a mobility issue; it is a fundamental part of Karachi’s economic and social infrastructure. A reliable, affordable and integrated transport system is essential to making the city more productive, connected and livable for its citizens.
