Nepal floods: a humanitarian tragedy

The devastating flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26 have once again reminded the world of the vulnerability of communities living in mountainous regions. The disaster has caused a heavy loss of life, displaced people and destroyed homes, roads, bridges and other vital infrastructure.

Rescue teams are still searching for missing people, while families wait anxiously for news of their loved ones. The floods were particularly destructive in areas along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.

Powerful torrents of water and mud swept through settlements with extraordinary force, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Roads and bridges were washed away, making it difficult for rescuers to reach some of the worst-affected areas. Hydropower facilities and other infrastructure have also suffered serious damage. What makes the tragedy particularly distressing is the large number of people still unaccounted for.

Both local residents and foreign visitors have been caught up in the disaster. According to the latest official information, hundreds of people from several countries remain missing, although the figures are being revised as authorities verify information and continue search operations. The immediate priority must be saving lives. Nepalese security forces, emergency services, medical teams and local authorities have been mobilised for rescue and relief operations.
