KARACHI: Pakistan Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi on Friday assured freight-sector partners that the government will provide enhanced facilities and prioritise cargo transportation to expand the railway’s freight operations.

Speaking at a meeting here with freight-sector business partners, Abbasi said the engagement would help promote commercial activity and strengthen cooperation between Pakistan Railways and the business community.

He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had decided against increasing freight tariffs and assured business partners that all possible facilities would be provided. “Freight transportation will be given priority,” Abbasi said, adding that the government would address all feasible demands of the business community.

He said sufficient rolling stock would be available for freight operations by December 31 to meet the requirements of business partners.

He directed officials to prepare a feasibility study for establishing a mechanised terminal at Jumma Goth in Karachi to improve the efficiency of freight handling.

Abbasi subsequently conducted a detailed inspection of the Pipri Marshalling Yard, where he reviewed operational activities and received briefings on available facilities and ongoing development projects.

He also visited the container terminal at the yard and directed officials to complete its construction by September 30.

He ordered immediate measures to improve the freight sector, including a review of the overhaul of flat containers and freight wagons. ?“Pakistan Railways is continuing its efforts to achieve self-reliance and modernise its operations,” Abbasi said, emphasising the need to enhance operational capacity to conserve time and resources.

Officials also briefed the minister on a decision to outsource welding work at the Pipri yard.

During the visit, Abbasi met with gang-men, heard their concerns and directed officials to ensure the timely payment of their salaries.

The chairman and chief executive officer of Pakistan Railways, along with other relevant officials, accompanied the minister during the visit.
