KARACHI: More rain and thundershowers are expected in the upper and central parts of the country over the weekend as monsoon currents continue to penetrate the regions, the Met Office said on Friday.

A westerly wave is also present over the upper parts of the country and is likely to cause rain, wind and thundershowers in several areas till Sunday, with occasional gaps.

In Kashmir, rain-wind/thundershower activity, with isolated heavy falls, is expected in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur through Aug 23, with occasional gaps.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain-wind/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are expected in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, D I Khan, Bannu and Waziristan over the period, with occasional gaps.

In Islamabad and upper Punjab, rain-wind/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Sialkot, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib till Sunday morning, with occasional gaps.

Rain is also expected in Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Pakpattan and D.G. Khan on Saturday.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, rain-wind/thundershowers are expected in Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar during the forecast period, with occasional gaps.

In Sindh and Balochistan, mainly hot and humid weather is expected in most areas. However, rain-wind/thundershowers are likely in Musakhel, Barkhan, Zhob, Kalat and Khuzdar on Saturday.

The Met Office warned that heavy rain could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore during the weekend.

It said heavy rain could also trigger flash floods in local streams and nullahs in Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad and Rawalpindi during the forecast period.

There is also a risk of landslides in hilly areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir.

Tourists and travellers have been advised to remain cautious during the forecast period. Farmers have also been advised to plan crop activities according to weather conditions and take care of their livestock.

All concerned authorities have been directed to remain vigilant and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation during the forecast period.
