ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index (SPI)-based inflation for the week ended August 13 recorded an increase of 0.15 percent, due to a hike in the prices of onions, pulse gram, and chicken, which rose by 24.68 percent, 3.35 percent, and 2.45 percent, respectively.
According to SPI data released on Friday, other items that witnessed an increase were Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) by 0.67 percent, tea Lipton by 0.63 percent, mustard oil by 0.45 percent, curd by 0.34 percent, pulse masoor by 0.24 percent, garlic by 0.22 percent, and washing soap by 0.11 percent.
On the other hand, a major reduction was registered in the prices of petrol by 2.35 percent, tomatoes by 1.26 percent, potatoes by 0.73 percent, bananas by 0.36 percent, pulse moong by 0.35 percent, diesel by 0.29 percent, pulse mash by 0.27 percent, eggs by 0.19 percent, sugar by 0.11 percent, and gur by 0.10 percent.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 20 items, which constitute 39.22 percent of the SPI basket, increased; prices of 9 items, which constitute 17.65 percent of the basket, recorded a reduction; and prices of 12 items, which constitute 43.13 percent of the basket, remained stable.
The Year on Year (YoY) SPI recorded an increase of 9.11 percent, driven by sharp rises in the prices of tomatoes by 143.77 percent, onions by 125.75 percent, wheat flour by 77.41 percent, LPG by 55.41 percent, diesel by 34.05 percent, petrol by 23.02 percent, bananas by 17.65 percent, gents sponge chappal by 16.69 percent, chilies powder by 16.37 percent, mutton by 15.98 percent, beef by 13.42 percent and bread plain by 9.37 percent.
On YoY basis, a reduction was observed in the prices of potatoes by 30 percent, sugar by 17.93 percent, chicken by 17.45 percent, pulse gram by 14.39 percent, salt powder by 13.96 percent, pulse masoor by 12.56 percent, eggs by 11.70 percent and pulse moong by 5.89 percent.
Breaking down SPI by income groups, households with a monthly income of up to Rs 17,732 saw a 0.46 percent increase, with SPI jumping from 347.11 to 348.71 points. For the Rs 17,733-22,888 income group, SPI went up by 0.37 percent, going up from 348.19 to 349.48 points.
Households earning Rs 22,889-29,517 saw a 0.28 percent increase, going up from 369.65 to 370.70 points, while the Rs29,518-44,175 bracket SPI went up by 0.22 percent from 356.99 to 357.78 points. The highest income group, Rs 44,175 and above, recorded a 0.04 percent increase, taking SPI up from 357.16 to 357.31 points.
