Futures trading rebounds sharply

Published Updated

KARACHI: Trading activity in the futures market witnessed a sharp rebound during the week ended July 31, mirroring the recovery in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) as easing geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran encouraged investors to rebuild leveraged positions. Futures spread returned to positive territory during the review period, improving by 691 basis points to 5.09 percent, compared with negative 1.82 percent recorded in the preceding week.

Average daily turnover (ADTO) in the futures market surged 157.6 percent week-on-week to 477.59 million shares, compared with 185.38 million shares in the previous week.

The value of futures trading also increased substantially, with average daily traded value rising 156.0 percent to Rs19.86 billion, up from Rs7.76 billion a week earlier, reflecting a significant improvement in market participation and trading activity.

Despite the recovery, analysts noted that activity in the derivatives market is likely to remain sensitive to developments on the geopolitical front, movements in international oil prices, and domestic macroeconomic indicators, which are expected to continue shaping investor positioning in the coming weeks.
