Indonesia rice prices rise for six months in a row despite record stocks

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s rice prices have steadily increased in the past six months despite the state logistics agency Bulog holding record amounts of stock, compiled data from the statistics bureau showed.
Bulog said the agency held 5.4 million metric tons by late June this year, compared to 3.25 million tons at the end of 2025, a 66% increase.
The price increase happened across retail, wholesale and milling levels, with retail rice prices rising by about 2.7% from January to June to 15,440 rupiah ($0.86) per kg, while wholesale prices climbed 3.3% and milling-level prices increased 2.3%.
Vietnam rice rates up on El Nino fears
Indonesia’s rice output in the first eight months of this year is expected to be 25.28 million metric tons, up just 0.05% from the same period last year, the statistics bureau said on Wednesday.
A staple for most of the population, the Southeast Asian country has also raced to combat the effects of a severe El Niño and lengthy dry spells that threaten domestic rice yields by planting rice early.
