KARACHI: Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Wednesday announced that the Sindh government has decided to establish a modern terminal for trucks, trailers, and heavy-load vehicles on the Northern Bypass outside Karachi.

A dedicated heavy-vehicle corridor will also be developed from Karachi Port to the proposed terminal to ensure the smooth movement of cargo traffic, he said adding that the project would help reduce the burden of heavy traffic within the megacity and improve Karachi’s overall transport system.

The decision was taken during a key meeting of the board of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority chaired by Sharjeel Inam Memon, who holds portfolios of Information, Transport and Mass Transit.

Detailed discussions were held on multiple projects aimed at improving urban transport systems in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur, easing traffic congestion, and promoting environment friendly transportation facilities.

The board also decided to launch the EV taxi service in Karachi in the near future. Approval was granted to begin the financial evaluation process this month to expedite implementation of the project.

In another major development, the meeting approved the purchase of 50 new double-decker buses for Karachi.

Sharjeel Memon said the initiative is aimed at improving urban mobility and passenger flow across the city. Each bus will have the capacity to accommodate 126 passengers, significantly reducing pressure on the public transport network.

The board further approved the procurement of 500 additional Pink EV Scooties for women.

Memon said the scooties will be distributed among women in Hyderabad on May 23.
