The New York mayor Zohran Mamdani deserves praise for adopting the right approach to the US military action in Venezuela.
Mamdani has called President Donald Trump personally to object to the US military operation, saying that the operations in South America would “directly impact New Yorkers.”
“I called the president and spoke with him directly to register my opposition to this act,” Mamdani has reportedly said at a press conference, adding that he has told the president he is opposed to a pursuit of regime change and to the violation of federal and international law.
Mamdani, who has been described by The New York Times as a progressive, and as a left-wing populist by The Guardian, and who has certainly added to his profile by challenging Trump on this occasion in particular, has rightly described the US military action as a grave violation of international law.
In my view, however, this action constitutes further proof that the so-called rules-based order does not exist, or it never existed. Antonio Gramsci had famously described “common sense” as the uncritical, inherited beliefs and values absorbed from the past that shape a person’s worldview.
Trump’s action in Venezuela clearly shows his worldview and proves that he’s a fascist, although he cannot be compared to Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler owing to a variety of reasons.
