ISLAMABAD: As tensions between Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan continue to escalate, Russia on Wednesday proposed to mediate in the ongoing disputes between Pakistan and its two neighbouring countries.
The offer came from Albert P Khorev, Russia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, while speaking at a function hosted by the Institute of Strategic Studies, a local think tank focused on international relations, defence, security, and strategic policy.
Khorev expressed Russia’s willingness to facilitate dialogue between Pakistan and both India and Afghanistan, emphasising that Moscow is deeply concerned about regional security, particularly the volatile situation in Afghanistan.
He highlighted that Russia views the growing tensions in South Asia with apprehension and is committed to supporting peace initiatives in the region.
“Russia stands ready to play a constructive role in resolving these conflicts,” he said, referring to the long-standing disputes between Pakistan and both of its neighbours. “We believe that regional stability is essential, and it is our responsibility to help mediate where possible.”
The Russian ambassador further stated that many of the tensions between South Asian countries are often exacerbated by the involvement of external powers.
In this context, he reaffirmed Russia’s position of supporting regional peace efforts and counter-terrorism strategies. “The challenges facing this region must be addressed by the countries of South Asia themselves, with external powers playing a supporting role rather than exacerbating conflicts,” he remarked.
Khorev also touched on the broader context of Russia’s relationship with Pakistan, emphasising the strategic importance of the country within President Vladimir Putin’s Greater Eurasian Partnership vision.
He characterised Pakistan as a key regional partner in Moscow’s wider plans for economic, social, and security cooperation across Eurasia.
“Pakistan holds significant importance within our vision for a multipolar world order, where regional issues should be resolved by regional parties themselves,” he said. “We are committed to supporting Pakistan’s development and its role in shaping the region’s future.”
The ambassador’s remarks come amid increasing tensions in the region, where military standoffs and diplomatic disputes have escalated in recent months.
Pakistan and India, both nuclear-armed neighbours, have a long history of strained relations, while Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan have been fraught with challenges, particularly following the Taliban’s return to power in Kabul.
