KARACHI: Karachi has endured several days of heavy monsoon downpours, with the most intense rainfall lashing the city on August 20. Meteorologists now predict lighter showers and cloudy skies in the days ahead.
Between August 18 and 22, the city was drenched by widespread rainfall, though totals varied across neighbourhoods. Gulshan-e-Hadeed received the highest at 235 mm, followed by Keamari with 222 mm and Saadi Town with 213.7 mm.
Other locations also crossed the 200 mm mark, including Orangi Town with 205.5 mm, the old airport station with 205 mm, and Nazimabad with 204.6 mm. In contrast, Gulshan-e-Maymar recorded the lowest at 152.5 mm, while P.A.F. Masroor Base in Mauripur measured 153 mm.
The wettest day across the city came on August 20, when every station recorded its highest daily totals. Gulshan-e-Hadeed logged 178 mm, Kemari 173 mm, and the old airport 163.5 mm. Orangi Town saw its heaviest spell a day later on August 21 with 113 mm.
The rains had started lightly on August 18 and 19, when Saadi Town reported 35.8 mm and Gulshan-e-Maymar 33.3 mm. By August 22, showers had eased to only 10 to 20 mm in most areas.
Looking ahead, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast mostly cloudy conditions with chances of drizzle or light rain in Karachi division through August 24.
Maximum temperatures will hover between 31 and 34 degrees Celsius, while minimums are expected to range between 25 and 28 degrees.
The Met Office also reported a medium-level flood at Guddu Barrage, a low-level flood at Sukkur Barrage, and normal water flow at Kotri Barrage.
Meanwhile, residents are struggling with prolonged power cuts. In Shah Faisal UC-3 Green Town and other areas, electricity has been suspended for hours. Citizens say the inefficiency of K-Electric has added to their distress.
Many are demanding that K-Electric’s license be revoked and that more companies be allowed to supply electricity in Karachi, ending the monopoly over power distribution.
Authorities have alerted key institutions including the Governor House Sindh, Chief Secretary Sindh, K-Electric, Karachi’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor, and emergency services to remain vigilant as the city recovers from the week’s heavy rains.
