ISLAMABAD: Heavy monsoon rain is expected to hit Pakistan on Monday and last for several days, the weather office said, raising the risk of flooding in areas still recovering from a devastating deluge last year.

Large swathes of the South Asian country were submerged last year due to extremely heavy monsoon rains and melting glaciers, a phenomenon linked to climate change that damaged crops and infrastructure and killed at least 1,700 people.

Heavy thunder and rain was expected from Monday evening in the capital, Islamabad, as well as in the cities of Lahore and Peshawar, spreading to other areas until Saturday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said.

Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, 2 other cities: urban flooding, a looming threat

The weather office warned that flooding was possible in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore, with the risk of flash floods in hilly western areas late this week.

In 2022, a flood that caused a lot of damage in provinces. The total loss was 32 billion dollars, and Sindh alone suffered 18 billion dollars in damages. More than 1,700 people lost their lives, including over 650 children. Many school buildings were destroyed, leaving thousands of children without access to education, especially girls. The flood also had a big impact on infrastructure and economy, particularly in the agricultural sector. Right now, in Sindh, the date palm trees are ready for harvest, and the cotton crop is almost mature. If there are heavy rains, it can greatly affect crops like dates, cotton, nd other crops. It's not just the government's job to address this issue, but we also need to support the government. We need to protect our crops by strengthening canal embankments and improving drainage systems in cities. we need to stay united and be prepared for this challenge. By working together, we can minimize the impact of the floods and protect our communities.
