Calling for Pakistan to hold government-to-government talks, Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani said on Wednesday that they want to forget the past and start a new chapter with the country.

Speaking at the 2nd Kabul Process Conference, Ghani also proposed a ceasefire and called on the Taliban to take part in peace talks to save the country, Afghan media TOLO News reported. The conference was attended by representatives from more than 25 countries including Pakistan and members from international organizations.

Ghani also offered to recognize the Taliban insurgents as a legitimate political group. He added that Afghan government will provide security for those Taliban who join the peace process.

Ghani announced that the government will provide passports to Taliban members and their families. They will also work to remove sanctions against Taliban leaders.

Afghan president a day before the meeting on Twitter had said that he will be presenting a detailed peace offer to Taliban and Pakistan on behalf of the Afghan people in the conference. "We wish to march towards a lasting peace in Afghanistan and in the region!"

Thanking the delegates from all the countries, Ghani said, “Your presence here is a visible reminder that we are an international community united not only by shared threats, but shared interests and shared opportunities.”
