NAB chief orders inquiry against K-Electric over load-shedding, overbilling

  • K-Electric is also accused of "allegedly not complying fully" with an agreement it had reached with the government under which it was required to carry out necessary investment for developing the electricity supply system on modern lines

(Karachi) National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Javed Iqbal has ordered to initiate an inquiry against the K-Electric (KE) over complaints of unannounced electricity load-shedding in Karachi, over-billing and violations of an agreement with the federal government for developing the power utility's infrastructure.

A statement issued by the anti-graft body on Thursday stated, “The chairman has taken notice of media reports and public protests against overbilling and prolonged power outages in the metropolis.”

The accountability watchdog said that the power supply company was supposed to make investment according to a pact with the federal government. The NAB statement said that K-Electric is accused of not keeping its side of the bargain in the agreement with the government.

K-Electric is also accused of "allegedly not complying fully" with an agreement it had reached with the government under which it was required to carry out necessary investment for developing the electricity supply system on modern lines.

The bureau's chairman has directed NAB Karachi to obtain a copy of the agreement entered into by KE, details of the investment done by it and other relevant documents.
