Speaker Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro has said that India was a big market and granting an MFN status to the neighbouring country would benefit Pakistan. Speaking at a meeting of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Monday, he was optimistic that by granting MFN status to India, Pakistan's exports would increase substantially.
He regretted that Pakistan was far behind the other countries in the region despite the availability of both natural and human resources. He blamed discontinuity of the democratic process for all ills of the country. Whenever a government was democratically elected, it was never allowed to complete its term by doctorial forces, he added. Giving example of India, he said that the country had made a remarkable progress due to continuity of democratic processes there.
Khuhro said that efforts were being made to tap natural resources of the country to keep wheels of industries moving and generate employment. He said that Pakistan had signed an agreement with a Chinese firm under which wind turbines would be produced locally.
Khuhro further said that the government would complete its tenure and would again present itself before the pubic in the next elections. He agreed with the Prime Minister's statement that if the five-year term was considered long, then the relevant laws should be amended to reduce the tenure.
Referring to a demand of allowing the KCCI members to attend the Sindh Assembly sessions and guide the government on economic issues, he said the law did not permit it. However, he assured that he would ask the Sindh Finance Minister to consult the KCCI while preparing budget proposals.
Leader of Businessmen Group (BMG) Siraj Kassim Teli expressed concern over the increasing frustration among the masses. He said that discipline was the first step on the road to success which he added no more existed. President KCCI Mian Abrar Ahmed suggested that the government should prepare a single page form to collect all the provincial taxes.
