Facelift of the Karachi Press Club (KPC) building, a designated heritage of the province will be included among the priorities of the Sindh Culture Department, said Sassui Palejo, Sindh Minister for Culture on Saturday.
Talking to the governing body members of Karachi Press Club, following inaugural of a two-day flower exhibition, organised by the club in co-ordination with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the Minister said that importance of the KPC could not be ignored under any context.
Sassui Palejo said the role of KPC and the journalists of the metropolis in the Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD) in 1980s was a landmark in itself. She asked the KPC office-bearers to submit their proposals about conservation of the building on modern lines besides creation of a cultural site on its side lawn. "We will include this project in our next series of schemes that would commence soon on completion of our current projects," she added.
The Culture Minister said Karachi and its inhabitants were very close to the heart of PPP, as both shared their respect for human dignity. As a mark of our respect and regard for Karachiites we have given a "Monument of Love" at Seaview and this is in form of a "Tulip" designed by known sculptor Jamal Shah, she said.
The Culture Department will also build a "Sooriya Badshah" monument to honour late Pir Sahab Pagara, she mentioned. The Minister said the department has chalked out programmes to promote cultural activities in the province. "Members of KPC comprising journalists hold immense responsibility to educate masses about the importance of weather as well as the environmental degradation and pollution causing threat to it," she commented. KPC Secretary, Moosa Kaleem briefed her about different projects undertaken by the club for the well being of its members. KPC Vice President, Amir Lateef and office bearers including Ghazala Fasih, Arif Jiaja, Zia Qureishi and others were also present on the occasion.
