Traders on Saturday showed apprehension over the unhygienic conditions of markets, saying that the city administration has failed to pump-out accumulated rainwater from there. Talking to Business Recorder, Chairman All Karachi Tajir Ittehad, Muhammad Atiq Mir said the civic management has ignored draining stagnant rainwater from the markets, which has become breeding fields for mosquitoes.
He said that the rising dengue disease has panicked the traders' community as it has shaken different parts of Punjab and some cases have also emerged in the city. "It seems the civic administration is waiting for the disease to hit Karachi," he added. He revealed that there are only three officials available to undertake the cleanliness job in Saddar town, whereas there are several markets where traders continue to face hardships due to filthy streets.
He said the accumulated rainwater has created difficulties for the businessmen and has reduced their activities in the markets badly, urging the government to take immediate steps to flush out rainwater to avoid any epidemic disease in the metropolis. "The markets are places where people from all segments of the society arrive and such disease could become any easy carrier to affect others," he said and regretted that the civic administration has been negligent to vision the disastrous impact of the virus in the metropolis.
