Former President of Pakistan and Chief of Army Staff and the head of All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), Pervez Musharraf has said that the United States is equally, if not more, responsible for failure to uproot the Haqqani network. He said that the current political and diplomatic crisis between Pakistan and US is a result of trust deficit between the two countries.
The leader of APML said that the US should not pass the blame of supporting the Haqqani network to Pakistan and said that the statements accusing Pakistan's involvement in the attack on US embassy in Kabul is unacceptable and irresponsible. He viewed the exchange of harsh statements between the two states as very serious and maintained that Admiral Mullen should display a more responsible attitude towards an ally that has long sided with the United States on supporting the war on terror.
He termed the relationship between Pakistan and United States in the interest of the broader world and highlighted that both Pakistan and US need each other in the fight against terrorism. Musharraf was of the view that Pakistan has paid a heavy price in supporting the US and coalition forces in the war on terror despite being under constant threat and attack by these very militants.
He said that the failure to capture and apprehend the leaders of the Haqqani network lies equally with Pakistan and the US. The leaders of Haqqani network are primarily Afghan nationals and, therefore, travel frequently between Pakistan and US controlled Afghan areas. The failure to capture these elements across the two regions reflects a failure on part of both Pakistan and the Nato forces and, therefore, the complete blame to be placed on Pakistan's shoulders is not justified.-PR
