A judicial commission constituted to look into the murder of journalist Saleem Shahzad on Monday started its proceedings at Supreme Court (SC) Lahore registry and directed Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to preserve record of Shahzad's communication till the day of his killing.
The commission was headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar of the Supreme Court while Federal Shariat Court Chief Justice, Agha Rafique Ahmad Khan, Punjab and Islamabad Inspectors General of Police Javed Iqbal and Bani Amin, President Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, Pervez Shaukat attended the commission proceedings as its members.
Federal Secretary Information, Taimoor Azmat Usman, being secretary of the judicial commission, also joined the proceedings and produced all available record pertaining to murder of Shahzad.
The commission after lengthy deliberations from its members directed the FIA to get access to emails of the journalist and produce the same before the commission on July 6, next date of proceedings, Secretary to commission. Taimoor told media persons that the PTA chairman has been directed to preserve record of calls made through and received on the cellular phone of Saleem Shahzad.
The commission directed the telecommunication authority to ensure that the record of the mobile phone was not distorted and erased and produced complete record on next date of hearing. He further said that a secretariat of the commission was established at Islamabad centre of Pakistan Television Network. He said relatives, friends, journalists and public at large had been invited to contact the commission secretariat till July 5 if they had any information about murder of Shahzad.
He informed the media that the commission directed both IGPs to let the investigation into the case carry out and keep the commission informed with progress on each hearing. Talking to the media, PFUJ President, Pervez Shaukat expressed his satisfaction on the proceedings of the commission and admired remarks of Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, which he made during the proceedings.
