Tehran's state-owned flag carrier Iran Air rejected on Saturday fresh US sanctions against it, insisting it is just a "commercial company" that operates under international aviation law. "We are a commercial company and our job is transporting passengers and cargo," CEO Farhad Parvaresh told the state television website.
Iran Air's "operations are completely within the framework of the aviation agreements and treaties that have been signed bilaterally and internationally," he said. The remarks came after the United States imposed sanctions on the airline on Thursday for allowing Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards to "transport military related equipment" since 2006.
"Rockets or missiles have been transported via Iran Air passenger aircraft, and IRGC officers occasionally take control over Iran Air flights carrying special IRGC-related cargo," the US Treasury Department said. Iran Air has been under US sanctions since 1995 that have prevented any sale of Boeing or Airbus aircraft or spare parts to it. As a result, it has become one of the most dilapidated airlines in the world.
