US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Tuesday called on European Union authorities to speak with a single voice on the Greek debt crisis. "I think it would be very helpful to have Europe speak with a clear, unique voice over a strategy" to tackle the crisis, Geithner said at a Washington conference organised by The Wall Street Journal.
"It's very hard for people who invest in Europe to understand what the strategy is when you have so many voices." Asked whose voice that would be, Geithner said: "They have to make that choice. "They've got a complicated set of institutions. But they have to agree on a strategy, and on that clarity, for people on the markets to understand what the basic plan is." Geithner indicated that was the message he delivered to his counterparts in the Group of Seven rich countries during two conference calls on the Greek crisis Sunday and Monday.
