Unkraine's president hailed a "historic breakthrough" in relations with China Monday, after signing a declaration of strategic partnership and $3.5 billion worth of deals with his Chinese counterpart. President Viktor Yanukovych and China's Hu Jintao personally signed the declaration of strategic partnership, a term Beijing only uses for its very closest allies.
"This is a historic breakthrough in Ukrainian-Chinese relations," Yanukovych told reporters at a news conference with Hu, putting the value of deals signed during Hu's visit at $3.5 billion. These included a deal for China to extend a $1 billion loan to Ukraine to build a rail link between Kiev and its airport Boryspil. Yanukovych also said he expected that trade with China would exceed $12 billion by 2012.
