Turkish assets mixed

Published Updated

Turkish assets were mixed on Friday, when stocks turned higher after France and Germany hinted at an aid deal to save Greece from a default, while the domestic focus shifted to a central bank meeting next week. The bank faces growing calls ahead of its monthly rate meeting next Thursday for action to cool an economy that analysts say looks to be overheating despite a series of experimental policy moves by the bank to rein in credit growth.
Officials told Reuters on Friday the government was considering limits on bank loans among measures aimed at slowing down imports in order to contain a widening current account deficit. By 1500 GMT the lira was firmer at 1.5957 against the dollar from 1.6235 on Thursday. The benchmark February 20, 2013 bond yield rose to 9.04 percent, up from 9.03 percent at the close on Thursday. The main Istanbul share index reversed earlier losses, to close up 1 percent at 61,716.68 points, outperforming the emerging markets benchmark index which fell 0.3 percent. Turkish central bank will meet on June 23 for its monthly rate decision.
