Various varieties of fresh dates will be available in markets from July 1st in Sindh, Business Recorder learnt on Saturday. According to the sources, this year production of dates would be higher as compared to last year. Around 268576 metric tons of dates were produced in 2010, says a report complied by the agriculture department.
Khairpur Mir's district is very famous for its dates. It was major district of Sindh where 229674 metric ton dates were produced in 2010. Likewise Sukkur is also one of the important districts for the production of dates where 30008 metric tons of production was recorded in 2010. In Ghotki district 5266 metric tons of dates were produced in 2010. Agriculture experts were of the view that this year prices of various verities of dates would be higher as compared to last year.
Aijaz Ahmed Shaikh, a grower of dates from Sukkur district, told Business Recorder that increase in dates production depends on rains, if rains would continue for some days they would reduce production otherwise it would be better than production of last year. He said that there were more than 20 varieties of dates including Rukann, Toto, Puprro, Panjmel, Karbalainn, Aseel, Khaark, Dang, Mithrree, Badam Khaarak, Katal and many others. He said that dates of Khairpur Mir's and Sukkur were very famous.
