Pakistan Bar Council representative in the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), Dr Khalid Ranjha on Saturday provided a copy of the rules to the Council content of which forbids him to disclose the commission's proceeding to anybody. Dr Khalid Ranjha told Business Recorder that he has provided a copy to the Council after bringing it to the notice of the PBC Chairman.
Earlier, the executive body of the PBC met here and passed a unanimous resolution against the in-camera proceedings of the JCP. The sources said the PBC executive body summoned Dr Khalid Ranjha for briefing on the Judicial Commission's proceedings, but he refused to brief the PBC's executive members on the matter saying that every member of the Judicial Commission is bound to keep the JCP proceedings confidential. However, a PBC member told this correspondent that PBC had directed the Vice Chairman Latif Afridi to write a letter to Dr Faqir Hussain Secretary JCP, asking for the minutes of every JCP meeting.
Under article 175-A of the Constitution, the members of the Judicial Commission for the appointment of judges in the Supreme Court are as follows: Chief Justice of Pakistan as Chairman, four most senior judges of the SC, a former Chief Justice or a former judge of the SC to be nominated by the CJP in consultation with the four-member judges, for a period of two years, federal Minister for Law and Justice, Attorney-General for Pakistan and a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan nominated by the Pakistan Bar Council for a two-year term.
