Pakistan opposes Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital

Pakistan has joined other international communities to oppose and condemn United States President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and to shift the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“Pakistan opposes the US President Donald Trump’s plan to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,” according to a statement issued by Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi's office.

The statement further said that it was deeply regrettable that all the pleas from the different states to not to alter the legal and historical status of Al Quds Al Sharif were ignored more out of choice than necessity.

Trump recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, sparks firestorm

Pakistan called this decision ‘a serious violation of international law’ and ‘applicable United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions’. The statement issued stated that this decision of Trump’s signals a severe blow to the Middle East peace process as well.

Pakistan urged the US to revisit its decision as soon as possible and also called upon the UN Security Council to take cognizance of this situation and take steps in accordance with the UN Charter.

Turkey’s announcement to convene an extraordinary Islamic Summit next week to discuss this issue was welcomed by the government of Pakistan.

Apart from Pakistan, other Muslim countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt have condemned this decision and have warned Trump against the move.
