Karachi traffic police would be having surveillance cameras in a month or two at 40 different points to monitor traffic flow and to prevent accidents in the city, DIG Traffic Khurram Gulzar said. Talking to PPI at his office on Monday here, Khurram Gulzar said that Ministry of Information Technology Sindh is funding this project.
"We have identified them 40 intersections in the city where surveillance cameras would be installed. He said that committees are working on this project and within two months these cameras would be installed in different parts of the city. These cameras would function to monitor traffic flow and accidents and they have nothing to do with security of the city, he said.
"We have identified 40 main intersections and 5 cameras would be installed on each intersection. Each intersection would have four fixed cameras while one camera would be movable. An operator would operate the movable camera and these cameras would be able to have the image and identification of number plate and the persons sitting inside the vehicle in complete darkness, he said.
He added that these cameras would be installed on main intersections of Sharae Faisal, Saddar high security zone and Defence. The traffic police have given the demonstration of these cameras, he said adding that under the contract the company of these cameras would provide maintenance of one year while training of probably two years or so to the traffic police personnel for handling these cameras.
He said that currently traffic police have no cameras functioning in the city, however, traffic police had 11 cameras around 15 years back, which were installed on Sharae Faisal but they are not functioning anymore. These cameras are outdated now and they could not be repaired as they had old technology.
Giving details of challans, he said traffic police have made overall 10,28,671 challans since January 1, 2009, out of which helmets challans are 3,26,365, pillion riding challans 10,662 and recovered Rs 8,21,12,450. He said that 80 percent of the people use helmets, which do not fit on the head, which is very dangerous. He added that people wear helmet just for the sake of formality without caring the dangerous repercussions.
The campaign against helmets has not ended as yet and it is there, he said. If we force people to wear helmets then problems are created, he said. However, people are more responsible for not wearing helmets. Majority of the people suffered head injuries when they have an accident on bike, he said. If we run a campaign then it is for the people's safety and people should co-operate to make it successful, he added. He said that if people cite reasons for not wearing helmets then hundreds of excuses are there.
He said that if people could buy a bike of Rs 45,000 for their convenience so why couldn't they buy a helmet of Rs 2,000 for the safety of their life. The media including print and electronic should help us in making people aware of their safety, he added.
