The Former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry has formed a new political party "Peoples Muslim League" (PML) vowing to resolve half a century old Kashmir imbroglio and accelerate reconstruction and rehabilitation of quake-affected areas.
He announced formation of his new political party at his Islamabad residence on Thursday, ending year-long speculations about his political future.
Addressing a press conference, the former AJK Premier said that he and his supporters have formed the new party with the commitment to address the manifold challenges like Kashmir dispute, reconstruction and rehabilitation of quake-affected areas, expansion of Mangla Dam and eradicating large-scale corruption in the AJK government.
"Our basic challenge is the Kashmir issue which is at the critical juncture and it needs our effective role," he added.
Sultan said that people are fed up with the two-party system in the AJK and wanted an indigenous set up, which could address their real issues. People from both the parties and other neutral groups have extended their full co-operation to the new party including at least 12 Assembly Members and 27 other ticket holders, he added.
He said that the PML would hold its first convention in Kotli on May 2 and in Rawalakot on May 4.
The new party would also hold conventions in all the district and Tehsil headquarters to launch its election campaign, he added.
He announced that first party meeting would be held on March 24 In Islamabad. Within a week, party secretariats would be established in all big cities of AJK and Pakistan and its central and regional office-bearers would be elected within a month, he said.
