The seeded Tommy Robredo, of Spain, and Australian Samantha Stosur were first round casualties at the 865,000-dollar ATP-WTA tournament here on Monday. The third seeded Spaniard was a stunning 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 loser to Paul Capdeville, who is ranked 127th. in the world and had to qualify to play in the tournament.
Capdeville, of Chile, will face either the 6ft. 10in. Croatian Ivo Karlovic or Danish qualifier Kristian Pless in the second round.
In the women's draw, American Ashley Harkleroad caused the second upset of the day by quickly eliminating Stosur, 6-4, 6-3. Harkleroad's opponent in the second round will be Danish wild card Caroline Wozniacki, who recorded a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 triumph over Puerto Rican Kristina Brandi.
The second seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld, of Germany, had a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 victory over Korean Yoon Jeong Cho. Groenefeld's next opponent will be American Shenay Perry, a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victor over Russian Ekaterina Bychkova.
Seventh-seeded American Amy Frazier also moved on with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against compatriot Meilen Tu and Russian qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over American Jamea Jackson.
